Historical Significance of the Udinoor Kshetrapalaka Temple:
1. Mythological Legends:
The origins of Udinoor Kshetrapalaka Temple are deeply rooted in mythology. According to local legends, the temple is believed to have been established by sage Parasurama, one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Parasurama, seeking to redeem himself of the sim of matricide, installed the idol of Palaka Devatha here. The Goddess Kalarathri is revered as the guardian deity, protecting the devotees from harm and ensuring their well-being.
There is a banyan tree situated in the south-west direction of the temple, beside the Kovilakam, on which lamps were lit as per the directions of the Kshetrapalan (Lord Shiva). The gods (Lord Shiva and Payyanur Devi), impressed by this, visited the Kovilakam to drink the milk placed in a bell metal goblet (Kindi) by the mother goddess. This Kindi which was placed upside down could not be moved by the other ladies of the Kovilakam.
2. Architectural Marvel:
The temple’s architecture showcases a blend of Kerala and Dravidian styles. The sanctum sanctorum, or the main shrine, is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting various mythological scenes. The vibrant colors and the detailed artwork on the temple walls narrate stories from ancient scriptures, adding to the visual appeal of the sacred space. Various sculptures carved from wood and rock add to the beauty of the temple. The shape of the sanctum is different for different gods here in the Udinoor Kshetrapalaka Temple. The sanctum is two-storied and rectangular-shaped for Lord Shiva, whereas that of Goddess Kalarathri is single-storied and square-shaped.
Spiritual Practices and Rituals:
1. Daily Pooja:
The temple follows a rigorous daily ritual schedule, with various poojas and ceremonies conducted to appease Palaka Devatha. Devotees participate in these rituals, seeking blessings for well-being, prosperity and protection from negative forces.
2. Annual Festivals:
The highlight of the temple’s calendar is its annual festival, which attracts pilgrims and tourists from far and wide. The festivities include grand processions, traditional music and dance performances, and cultural events that celebrate the region’s vibrant heritage. Paatulsavam festival is held on Kartika day in the month of Makara, which is one of the most important festivals. The festival lasts 11 days, culminating with a Theyyam performance on the eleventh day. Other festivals celebrated woth devotion and rigour include Kallakodukka, Avilyam, Paatinukalpikal and Pathamudayam.
